The Stuart Jackson Gallery is the oldest gallery in Canada dealing in antique Japanese woodblock prints, Ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e, meaning 'pictures of the floating world', was the most popular art form of 17th -19th century Japan. 'Ukiyo' was a Buddhist term referring to the melancholy transience of life. The concept was punningly altered to mean the fleeting pleasures of everyday life. Ukiyo-e depicted these pleasures, primarily through the medium of woodblock prints. Opened in March of 2006, this is one of the newest additions to the arts community at the Historic Distillery District. Making Room Curatorial was founded in 2006 by artist/curator Heather Nicol for her production of the exhibition Making Room. It has evolved into a collaborative parnership between Heather Nicol and Barbar Kerr. In September of 1991, the Academy of Spherical Arts opened in the historical building where the Brunswick Balke Collender Company manufactured billiard tables, cues, balls and all manner of accessories. Today, the Academy occupies 20,000 square feet, approximately one sixth of the old factory.
